You’re never too old to play with cardboard boxes!
Over a hot July weekend, Bedford held its 40th anniversary River Festival.
Viking was approached to support the Cardboard Boat Race for a second year, where it supplied participants with boxes and rolls of Viking tape.
The event was held by a company called Canoe Trail, a local water sports company, and was held in the Water sports Arena where young adults from two local charities, Young Carers of Bedfordshire and Fun 4 Young People of the YMCA, made up two teams.
The two teams competed in rounds in order to win equipment to build their boats. The rounds consisted of joke telling, a trivia quick fire, and many more. Each winner received either more cardboard or tape or, alternatively, extra time to complete their cardboard box boats.
Over 300,000 people attended over the two days and, at the end of the competition, the teams got a chance to try their boats on the river in front of the spectators.
As the teams gingerly put their crafts on the water and jumped on them, there was pure joy in the air for about 20 seconds as the teams rejoiced that they were actually floating. This was swiftly replaced with screams of shock as their crafts took on water and the team members were plunged into the cold – but refreshing! – River Ouse.
‘I attended on the Sunday and had the privilege of watching these amazing kids build their creations first hand. The competition was a fantastic way for these young people to take time out and have some great fun,’ said Viking's Kara Morrallee. ‘Scot and I agreed that it was a great weekend and an event that Viking will look forward to supporting again in 2020 – who knows… We may even participate next year!’
